Race, Class, and Student Activism

In the midst of a global pandemic that has disproportionately affected people of color and a national movement to protest systemic racism in American life, The Chronicle is convening a series of dialogues on race, class, and the role of higher education in promoting equity.

The conversation continues on August 20 with a panel of student activists from diverse backgrounds and with differing viewpoints. Our co-hosts Michael Sorrell, president of Paul Quinn College, and Sarah Brown, Chronicle senior reporter, will examine students’ calls for change within and beyond higher education. Join the conversation as we explore:
– What students want from their colleges and other social institutions
– Their strategies and tactics to advance those causes
– If and how, in a racially polarized society, it’s possible to build bridges between groups

The student panel will include:
– Naomi Mathew, Truman State University, Missouri state chair of Young Americans for Liberty
– Akhil Rajasekar, Princeton University, president of the Princeton Open Campus Coalition
– Martha M. Robles, California State University at Northridge, advocate for ethnic-studies curriculum requirement
– Jada Sayles, Dillard University, Black Lives Matter organizer
