Engage & Connect: Personable learning in K-12 remote teaching

Dr. Vanessa Ament and Dr. Richard Edwards from UC Riverside’s Exploration Center for Innovative Teaching & Engagement will host a conversation on best practices for K-12 remote teaching. They’ll share best practices for designing and adapting course content and how to better engage students, incorporate discussion-centered experiences, and assessment strategies and ideas for your subject and teaching style.

Some core topics covered include:

• A paradigm of the theory and methods of Personable Learning as it applies to K-12
• How to plan a welcoming map or introduction for your students
• How to ensure your students feel connected and engaged with you as instructor and other students
• How to consider the overall “storytelling” design of your semester
• How to include low-stakes and high-stakes assessments that work within remote teaching
• How to be your best self for a recorded lecture
• How to incorporate discussions and peer learning

Dr. Edwards leads XCITE (Exploration Center for Innovative Teaching and Engagement) and specializes imaginative pedagogical methods for in-person and distance/remote learning. Dr. Ament is a senior consultant for UCR’s office of Undergraduate Education and is an experienced K-16 education practitioner and scholar. Both Dr. Edwards and Dr. Ament offer expertise in adapting coursework, assessment, and engagement from the classroom to the virtual classroom.
