Education Insight: Inside the Classroom of California Teacher of the Year Heather Povinelli

About This Episode

Season 7. Episode 6.

California Teacher of the Year Dr. Heather Povinelli joins Education Insight for a thoughtful and deeply personal conversation about what truly makes a teacher exceptional.

Throughout the episode, she shares how relationships and trust form the foundation of her teaching philosophy. Rather than relying on control or raised voices, Dr. Povinelli has built a learning environment rooted in consistency, empathy, and high expectations. She speaks candidly about the pivotal moments in her career that shaped her approach, including the decision to return to the classroom and the insights gained from her doctoral research.

Dr. Povinelli also discusses how her lived experience as an educator with dwarfism has informed her understanding of equity, not as an abstract concept, but as something tangible and visible to children every day. From teaching fairness through real-world examples to recognizing the emotional depth of seven-year-olds, she challenges common assumptions about what young students can understand and achieve.

At its heart, this episode is about the power of love, safety, and belief in shaping a child’s academic and emotional future. Dr. Povinelli reminds us that while students may not remember every lesson, they will always remember how their classroom made them feel, and that feeling can last a lifetime.
