Education Chat: What’s an Internship, and How Do I Get One?

About This Episode

Season 5. Episode 8.

Internships. They are quickly becoming one of the most important steps in a college student’s journey. They offer real-world experience in a low-stakes environment before graduation, helping build connections, and sometimes can even open doors to full-time jobs. But for many students, the process of actually landing one can feel confusing or just plain overwhelming.

In the eighth episode of Education Chat’s fifth season, your host Natalie Hinton breaks it all down. What even is an internship? How do you find one? And once you do, what should you expect? With three internships in varying industries under her belt and more in her future, Natalie acts as both a guest and a host during this episode to share her own experiences.

She is joined by special guest Itzel Monarrez, an incoming master’s student in quantitative finance at UC San Diego. Growing up in the Inland Empire alongside Natalie, Itzel graduated from Yucaipa High School and has already completed two internships in sales and legislation during her undergraduate career. Together, the two reflect on their different paths, challenges, and successes with internships, while offering honest advice and encouragement for students who are just starting out. This episode is full of firsthand stories and practical insight relating to the entire cycle of completing an internship: from applying, to interviewing, to then thriving in a new position.

Even if you have already completed an internship, are currently applying for one, or have never even thought about securing an internship, this episode was created for students to help make the process more discernible in order to encourage you to take the next step in your academic and professional journey.
