SUMMARY:What it Takes to Be a “Student-Ready” Team Now
DESCRIPTION:The Covid-19 outbreak has reshaped the educational path of students. In just a few short weeks\, senior administrators and members of their teams must be prepared to be a “student-ready team” – working together to create an environment that supports the needs of students\, whether it be in the classroom\, remote\, or a mix of both. \nJoin Chronicle host Ian Wilhelm and a panel of senior administrators to discuss the growing needs of students in this uncertain time and what it will take in this ‘new normal.’ The conversation will explore:\n– How can CFOs\, CIOs\, and those who oversee student and academic affairs develop that environment?\n– How can they understand each others’ roles better and acquire a shared understanding of what students require today?\n– How do they break through campus silos and the potential challenges of remote work\, budget cuts\, and the uncertainty of the pandemic?

SUMMARY:Conversations on Race and Policing: A Student-Hosted Panel Discussion with Students\, Campus Guests and Faculty
DESCRIPTION:The U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling earlier this summer that prevented the Trump administration from immediately ending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) will be the focus when Cal State San Bernardino hosts the next Conversations on Race and Policing\, 4 p.m. Wednesday\, Aug. 12\, on Zoom. \nThe program will include an overview of the U.S. high court’s June 18 decisionupholding the program and what it means for California’s Dreamers. CSUSB DACA recipients\, some of whom may choose to remain anonymous\, will share their thoughts on the ruling. \nScheduled panelists are: \n\nMaria Maldonado\, coordinator\, CSUSB Undocumented Student Success Center\,\nDaisy Ocampo\, CSUSB assistant professor of history\, and\nDACA student recipients.\n\nThe U.S. Supreme Court\, on a 5-4 ruling\, said its decision was procedural – the Trump administration did not provide “a reasoned explanation” for dismantling DACA\, which stemmed from an executive action in 2012 by President Barack Obama. The decision neither upheld DACA nor abolished it\, so the ruling is considered a temporary reprieve. \nDACA allowed for “certain people who came to the United States as children and meet several guidelines may request consideration of deferred action for a period of two years\, subject to renewal. They are also eligible for work authorization. Deferred action is a use of prosecutorial discretion to defer removal action against an individual for a certain period of time. Deferred action does not provide lawful status.” \nMarisol Montejano\, who graduated from CSUSB in June with a degree in math\, told The New York Times upon learning of the court ruling\, “‘I was so worried that I might not be able to use my degree\, that I might get deported\,’ said Ms. Montejano\, 36\, who enrolled in 2014 in DACA\, which had been initiated two years earlier by President Barack Obama.” The newspaper quoted the mother of two U.S.-born children as saying\, “I feel like I can breathe. I feel like I can tell my kids it’s going to be OK.” \nThe series will continue on Aug. 19\, when the film\, “Profiled: The Mothers of Murdered Black and Latino Youth\,” will be shown\, followed by a discussion. The documentary\, winner of the 2018 Paul Robeson Award at the Newark Black Film Festival\, tells the stories of mothers of black and Latin youth killed by the NYPD\, powerfully illuminating racial profiling and police brutality within the context of white supremacy. \nThe ongoing Conversations on Race and Policing series\, now in its 10th week\, is hosted by CSUSB students Marlo Brooks\, Kameron Pyant and Yvette Relles-Powell. \nThe series is organized by CSUSB faculty members Marc Robinson (history)\, Mary Texeira (sociology) and Jeremy Murray (history)\, and Robie Madrigal\, public affairs/communication specialist for the CSUSB John M. Pfau Library. \nConversations on Race and Policing began in the aftermath of the May 25 death of George Floyd while in the custody of four Minneapolis\, Minn.\, police officers. A video of the incident posted on social media has led to widespread protests\, the firing of four police officers\, the arrest of one officer on a second-degree murder charge\, the other three on charges of aiding and abetting second-degree murder – and a spotlight worldwide on race and policing.

SUMMARY:Financial Planning During and Beyond Covid
DESCRIPTION:Covid-19 has drastically altered higher education\, delivering a shock to college and university budgets. Leadership has been forced to develop different financial models for on-campus and remote programs – cutting expenses\, potentially laying off employees\, and eliminating academic programs and sports teams. \nLeaders in higher ed are now asking:\n– How are college leaders thinking about the next three to five years?\n– How has the crisis changed how colleges approach financial planning?\n– What operational and structural changes might emerge from this moment?\n– And\, what lessons can be learned from such previous crises as the Great Recession of 2008? \nThis virtual event\, hosted by Chronicle journalist Eric Kelderman\, and joined by leaders from public and private colleges\, will examine the role of scenario planning as colleges try to balance the immediate financial impact of Covid-19 with trends in enrollment\, public funding\, and revenue streams over the next several years.

SUMMARY:Community Colleges Leading the Way
DESCRIPTION:The ongoing coronavirus pandemic and recent killings of Black individuals that have sparked protests nationwide highlight the numerous challenges faced by communities of color. The economic fallout from the pandemic will have grave consequences for public institutions of higher education\, including community colleges that serve primarily Black\, Latinx\, and Native American students. Community colleges are planning for the fall semester amid these crises\, but they may be disproportionately underfunded in the next federal stimulus bill. \nPlease join the Center for American Progress for an online event to hear from leaders of community colleges who are working to uphold equity in a crisis\, outside of the higher education spotlight on residential universities. They will discuss their approaches to planning for the fall semester\, their needs for public funding to meet this moment\, and how they are wrestling with the national conversation on racism and police brutality.
