SUMMARY:What Does This Mean for Our Status?: Accreditation as a Catalyst & Lever for College Completion
DESCRIPTION:Accreditation agencies are critical in shaping the institutional environment of learning and social support of students in the higher education ecosystem. In today’s climate\, campuses\, systems\, and states are in the midst of making numerous decisions related to COVID-19 and the heightened national demand for racial equality and economic mobility. A large-scale concern is the potential for institutions to lose ground in the previously made gains in college completion and student success\, that will be influenced and informed by accreditors. Please join Complete College America for a lively conversation with panelists from SACSCOC\, HLC\, and NWCCU that will address many of the overarching accreditation questions\, concerns\, and opportunities for institutions.

SUMMARY:Where Does the Money Come From? Financing International Terrorism
DESCRIPTION:What is the source of the money stolen or laundered by\nterrorists used to run their organizations and militant operations? Since they are often moving\, how do these terrorists keep their money safe and available? His book\, Making a Killing: States\, Banks and Terrorist Financing\,\nMcGill-Queens University Press will be available soon.\nDr. Oxnevad has a Ph.D. in Political Science/International Relations from\nUniversity of California Riverside and an MA in National Security Studies\,\nDual Emphasis: Middle East Security\, Terrorism from California\nState University\, San Bernardino. SUMMARY:BRIDGING EQUITY AND ENGAGEMENT GAPS IN THE VIRTUAL CLASSROOM
DESCRIPTION:Every student needs a sense of belonging to excel in class. Unfortunately\, the strategies that successfully engage students in physical classrooms often do not work in the digital environment. Last semester’s sudden transition to virtual teaching left even veteran professors struggling to build a community for their students—but students’ ongoing struggles with technology\, food\, income and housing insecurity make engagement more important than ever. \n\n\nAs many schools plan to teach remotely this fall\, faculty are in search of ways to engage every student in the middle of an unprecedented set of challenges. \nStrong student engagement is possible in the virtual classroom\, but it requires outside-the-box strategies that embrace the uniqueness of virtual learning. Join a panel of faculty and teaching experts for an interactive discussion on how to plan ahead for another semester of virtual teaching and address gaps in equity and engagement in the digital environment. \nThen\, check out how GIA advances educational equity initiatives.

SUMMARY:Racism is a Public Health Issue: Examining the Impact of Police Brutality on Black Communities in the Age of COVID-19
DESCRIPTION:When news of a novel coronavirus arrived in the United States in early January\, xenophobia was not far behind. Since the outbreak of COVID-19\, reports of racist attacks against Asian Americans increased. As the number of confirmed cases exploded in America\, racial disparities in health outcomes became starker. The hardest hit are often Black\, Latinx\, and Indigenous communities—many of whom are essential workers. Before and throughout the pandemic\, Black and Brown people across the nation have continued to be murdered at harrowing and unacceptable rates by the police. Join For Freedoms\, GYOPO\, LACMA\, and StopDiscriminAsian (SDA) for the second in a series of lively virtual conversations about the pandemic’s impact on the movement for racial justice\, and the country’s long standing health\, economic\, and racial inequities. \nRacism is killing Black people in America—both by fueling police violence against them and by propelling adverse socioeconomic conditions that contribute to serious health issues. The killings of Tamir Rice\, Michael Brown\, Eric Garner\, Breonna Taylor\, George Floyd\, and many other Black people are visceral reminders that racism drives inequities among historically marginalized populations nationwide. Not only are Black people killed by police at an extraordinarily disparate rate as compared to white people\, but their health and well-being are also negatively affected by environmental exposures\, limitations in access to health care\, and other factors. The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the inequities even further\, with Black communities seeing three times the rate of infection—and six times the rate of death—as white populations. \nJoin us for the second conversation in the series “Racism is a Public Health Issue” as we discuss the ways in which racism and discrimination create chronic physical and emotional health conditions. The trauma of racial violence reaches further than any single individual\, especially when the news cycle about Black deaths is unavoidable. Panelists will discuss the way violent images of Black suffering have been mediated\, circulated\, and weaponized; the reinvention of one’s relationship to those images; the utilization of those images without re-traumatization; and the power of art to address anxiety and other harms of racism. \nPanelists include Eraka P. Bath\, MD\, Associate Professor and Vice Chair for Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion for the Department of Psychiatry at the Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior\, UCLA; Ava DuVernay\, Filmmaker and Founder\, ARRAY; Darnell Hunt\, Professor and Dean of Social Sciences\, UCLA; and artist Rashid Johnson. Introduced by LACMA Curator of Contemporary Art and GYOPO co-founder Christine Y. Kim and moderated by LACMA Vice President of Education and Public Programs Naima J. Keith.

SUMMARY:TLC Kick-Off Week
DESCRIPTION:Other than health and safety issues\, the only thing we can be certain of is that we will have 4 basic needs that will directly affect our ability to provide a true\, right and just education to every student: \n• We will have less time with students than before\, so we need to know how to make every minute count.\n• We must to have the systems to help students who return at every level\, academically and socioemotionally.\n• We need to know the best ways to use technology as an accelerant.\n• We need a meaningful way to monitor progress to inform our practice. \nOrenda Education has designed research-based\, equity-grounded toolkits for each of these basic needs\, complete with systems\, strategies\, templates\, routines\, outlines\, planning guides and tip sheets—all built for differentiation. This is the TLC Model for Educational Equity and Economic Recovery. There are strands for:\n• Teachers\n• Counselors and other staff helping students with SEL and college/career guidance\n• Administrators\n• Paraprofessionals and other support staff \nExtensive training through the Orenda Academy accompanies the materials to give school staffs full confidence that you will meet the diverse academic and SEL needs of students\, no matter what the future brings.
